Calm your worries and build your bravery — or just relax during a busy day or wind down before bed with William Meyer’s picture book for kids, “Big Breath” and “Healing Breath” A Guided Meditation Through Nature for Kids”.
In this episode you will learn:
- Why it’s important to teach kids mindfulness and meditation
- As a parent, where to start with your child
- The lesson in this pandemic
- How to start a simple meditation practice
- 3 Deep breaths is a meditation
All day long, you breathe — in and out, in and out — without even thinking about it. But did you know that you can play with your breath, use it to take you on an adventure? All you have to do is find a comfy spot and close your eyes.
Does your breath sound like ocean waves? Like the wind before a storm or a breeze at the start of spring? Can you feel it all the way down to the tips of your toes? By the time you open your eyes, you might just feel a little lighter, calmer, more relaxed.
Bill Meyer is the author of two adventure chapter books for kids. He’s also written a picture book for kids that leads them through a guided breathing meditation. The book is called, Big Breath. He also published a guide for meditation in the classroom called, Three Breaths and Begin. His latest book published in November 2021 is “Healing Breath” A Guided Meditation for Kids Through Nature. He holds degrees from Dartmouth, Harvard and has a PhD from NYU in Education.

Teen Mental Health and the Pandemic - Richard Capriola
Sunday May 01, 2022
Sunday May 01, 2022
What if you found out your child searched online, “How to kill myself” - what would you do? Every parent MUST hear this interview.
If you know a child, teen or young adult who tried to commit suicide listen to this interview.
According to Baylor college of medicine, an article last November stated, “The pandemic uniquely impacted adolescents. Social isolation, constant uncertainty, stress, and fear have plagued their lives. According to the CDC, teenage emergency room visits for suicide attempts increased significantly during the pandemic, with a 50% rise in cases in females and almost 4% increase in males.”
In this episode you will learn:
- Be attentive to where your child is spending their time.
- Be a good role model. Take care of your own mental health. Your child(ren) is learning from watching how you take care of yourself.
- Questions to ask your child to gauge their mental health state
- Being vulnerable is powerful
- Children need a stable relationship with an adult
10 Questions to Ask as Part of a Mental Health Check-In
Newport Academy
https://www.newportacademy.com
Asking specific questions can help parents perform an accurate mental health check and may also help teens to recognize and manage emotions. Here are 10 emotional check-in questions to ask as part of a mental health temperature check-in:
- What three words best describe how you’re feeling right now?
- On a scale of 1 to 10, going from negative to positive, what number best describes your state of mind?
- Fill in the blank: Something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is…..
- If your feelings were weather, what kind of day would it be outside?
- If your life was a movie, what songs would be on the soundtrack right now?
- What would you like to have less of in your life right now?
- What would you like to have more of in your life right now?
- Tell me about the best thing and the worst thing that happened to you this week
- What’s the hardest part about being you right now?
- How can I support you better?
Depending on your teen’s personality and communication style, some of these emotional check-in questions might be more effective than others in eliciting answers.

How to Help Your Shy Kid Become Confident and Bold with Fred Joyal
Thursday Apr 21, 2022
Thursday Apr 21, 2022
Don’t you want your child to follow their dreams and seize all the opportunities that life has to offer? Try new things, explore the world, start a new business, fall in love, and become the best possible version of themselves? In order for that to happen, we need to set a good example for them and create an environment where they can thrive!
The problem is - being bold isn’t always easy! Boldness is confidence in action. Take risks. Try something new!
Fred Joyal is an author, speaker, entrepreneur, and business advisor. He co-founded the most successful dentist referral service in the country, 1-800-DENTIST. He has previously written two books on marketing, has dabbled in standup and improv comedy, acted in bad movies and excellent TV commercials. His latest book, Superbold: from Under-confident to Charismatic in 90 days, is an Amazon and Wall Street Journal bestseller. He once beat Sir Richard Branson in chess and was also a question on Jeopardy. He is an avid cyclist, a below-average tennis player and an even worse golfer. He lives in Los Angeles and skipped 2nd grade because he was so smart.
Bold individuals seize life in remarkable, almost unbelievable ways. They succeed in business, in careers, and in love, and they have a great time doing it. Bold people walk up to supermodels and ask them to dance. They stand in front of audiences and tell jokes. They start companies. They run for president.
What surprises most people is that boldness can be taught. Fred Joyal started as an extremely shy person, too timid even to make a phone call, and transformed himself into someone who has done stand-up and improv comedy, spoken to audiences of 5,000, met dozens of celebrities, and, just by being bold, found love, joy, passion, and success.
And he’s here today to teach you how and in this episode you will learn:
- Fred’s regrets from not being bold early on in life
- How Fred grew up shy and how his mother did it all wrong
- Whether we are born with confidence and boldness?
- The difference between boldness and confidence
- Tips to enhance social skills right away and how can we use them with kids and teens
“Nobody trains us to do what we do most and that is interact with people.” Fred Joyal

Live in the Moment Mindfully, not Mindlessly with Teen Author Maya Maymin
Friday Apr 15, 2022
Friday Apr 15, 2022
Maya co-authored a book on mindfulness for teens with Dr. Ellen Langer, (Mother of Mindfulness) Harvard Professor of Psychology. “Mindfulness for Middle Schoolers” https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08SPFCSP8/
Maya Maymin lives in New York and has written and published three books and given two lectures on mindfulness, one at a Wolfram Language Summer Camp and another on Harvard Zoom for middle schoolers. She has been working with Dr. Ellen Langer (the Mother of Mindfulness, Psychology Professor at Harvard) for about a year and a half and they wrote a book together on mindfulness for middle schoolers.
You will learn in this episode:
- What is mindfulness?
- How Maya got into mindfulness?
- The purpose of her book, “Mindfulness for Middle Schoolers”
- What counterforward is
- The difference between mindful memorization and mindless memorization
- Examples and exercises to practice mindfulness
“To stop being mindless, start noticing new things. Mindfulness as we study it, is the simple process of actively noticing new things. When you are noticing new things, that puts you in the present, makes you more aware of context, and that active noticing is the essence of engagement. When people are actively noticing, they become more energized. When you are actively noticing and being mindful, people find you more attractive, see you as charismatic, see you as trustworthy.” - Dr. Ellen Langer

Teen Substance Abuse - What Every Parent NEEDS To Know with Richard Capriola
Friday Mar 04, 2022
Friday Mar 04, 2022
In Richard Capriola’s new book, “The Addicted Child” (2020) - he explains substances being used by today's adolescents and the addictions which accompany teen substance abuse, like self-harm and eating disorders. Richard Capriola has been a mental health and addictions counselor for over two decades.
There are very few things more heart-wrenching for a family than having your child addicted to alcohol or drugs.
The most dangerous attitude a parent can have is thinking, “It could never happen to my child”.
If your child uses alcohol or drugs, you know how it affects your family. These substances enter your child’s brain and change their behavior. You want to help your child, but where do you begin? The Addicted Child is your roadmap. Learn what makes adolescent addiction different. How drugs can change your child’s brain and behaviors. The assessments and tests you should insist upon. And more.
Sadly, your desperate search for help often leaves you feeling alone and without a roadmap to guide you through the process of helping your child. The Addicted Child was written for you.
Richard Capriola is author of, "The Addicted Child" - a parent's guide to adolescent substance abuse. In Non-technical language parents learn how to identify and find treatment programs for their child. You will learn in this book the importance of comprehensive assessments - and what to look for in a counselor to know you're getting the right help.
The percentage of teens using illicit substances dropped significantly in 2021 as the pandemic forced them into isolating from friends, classrooms and extracurricular activities. Alcohol, marijuana and nicotine vaping – the most commonly used substances by teens all showed declines from 2020. These findings were reported by a Monitoring the Future survey conducted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research – http://www.monitoringthefuture.org.
Two issues drive teen substance use: drug availability and perception of risk.
Learn in this episode:
- Every child is vulnerable, no matter who they are or what status they have in society, by being captured by substance abuse
- Warning signs a parent should be aware of
- Drugs kids are using today and what’s changed last few years
- How the pandemic has impacted kid’s drug use
- If I suspect my child is using/abusing, what is the first thing I should do
- What causes a child to explore or get caught up in marijuana
- The most dangerous attitude a parent can have is thinking, “It could never happen to my child”
