Have More Fun with Your Kids with Michael Rucker, Author of ”The Fun Habit”
Sunday Sep 25, 2022
Sunday Sep 25, 2022
Do you ever find yourself not laughing as much with your kids? Do you miss the fun of your younger years? My guest today is Michael Rucker, author of, “The Fun Habit” - How the Disciplined Pursuit of Joy and Wonder can Change your Life. He is also an organizational psychologist, behavioral scientist and charter member of the International Positive Psychology Association.

After a string of misfortune in 2016, including Mike’s brother’s untimely death, he began to critically evaluate modern approaches to happiness. During this journey, he had an epiphany: his pursuit of happiness was actually making him… unhappy. He realized trying to be “happy” only drew his attention to what was missing. Fixating on his lack of happiness made him label himself as unhappy, and he came to realize that the maladaptive label was bleeding into his identity. This left him with the question: If deliberately chasing happiness leaves me miserable, what’s the alternative? Then, after years of research and trial and error, a second crucial insight clicked into place: We can’t always make ourselves happy, but we all possess the agency to find ways to be more joyful and have more fun.
Unlike happiness, fun isn’t something that may or may not arise under the perfect circumstances or when all of my “if-onlys” are fulfilled. Having fun is an action anyone can take here and now practically anywhere, anytime.
And if you’re a cynic like he was and need to see the proof, science shows us that fun is enormously beneficial to our well-being, both physically and psychologically.
So, let’s have fun together.

Start Your Day with a Guided Meditation | William Meyer
Sunday Sep 11, 2022
Sunday Sep 11, 2022
Mental Health Summit was kicked off this year with a guided meditation led by William Meyer. We brought the recording here for you. It’s a great way to start your day or take a mindful moment in the middle of your day.
William Meyer is the author of “Big Breath” and “Healing Breath” - Calm your worries and build your bravery — or just relax during a busy day or wind down before bed with these two picture books.
All day long, you breathe — in and out, in and out — without even thinking about it. But did you know that you can play with your breath, use it to take you on an adventure? All you have to do is find a comfy spot and close your eyes.
Does your breath sound like ocean waves? Like the wind before a storm or a breeze at the start of spring? Can you feel it all the way down to the tips of your toes? By the time you open your eyes, you might just feel a little lighter, calmer, more relaxed.
Bill Meyer is also the author of two adventure chapter books for kids. He also published a guide for meditation in the classroom called, Three Breaths and Begin. He holds degrees from Dartmouth, Harvard and has a PhD from NYU in Education.

September is Suicide Prevention Month and I wanted to bring a guest who could share their experience losing a loved one from death by suicide.
3 weeks prior to giving birth to triplets, Barbara Rubel’s father died by suicide. Her story was featured in an Emmy award winning documentary, “Fatal Mistakes” and she shares her story in her recent book, “But, I Didn’t Get to Say Goodbye”. She is a board certified expert in traumatic stress and she is here today to help you understand the effects of trauma, help build your resilience through laughter, optimism and self-compassion. Barbara Rubel’s specialty is burnout, vicarious trauma, and compassion fatigue.
In this episode you will learn:
- Managing grief after a suicide
- Reactions to a suicide
- What impacts grief after a suicide
- A palette of grief - suggestions to help those left behind
But I Didn’t Say Goodbye: Helping Families After a Suicide tells the story, from the perspective of a family, as they are rocked by suicide and reeling from the aftermath.
The reader will see the transformation of feelings after going through death by suicide. The revised edition is an evidence-informed and contemporary treatment of a devastating form of loss that uses the artful device of a hypothetical case study to render it in human terms.
The reader will understand how to make meaning in the loss, and ways to experience personal growth. This self-help book was revised to provide guidance and education for clinicians and families to help suicide loss survivors.
The chapters in Part 2 build upon one another sequentially, from the day of the suicide to the anniversary of the death. At the end of each chapter, there are follow-up questions to explore in counseling sessions, support groups, or at home.

At our Annual Mental Health Summit, Dr. Gominak shared with us how anxiety, depression, the world epidemic of sleep disorders AND MORE are due to a lack of Vitamins D and B.
Imagine a world filled with people pain-free. Mental illness, anxiety, depression and psychosis is a thing of the past. Medical illness is reduced and medication use is minimized. Dr. Gominak believes this saying is a reality, “See your doctor once a year, heal your body every night.”
Dr. Gominak also says that autism is linked to insufficient deep sleep and that the global struggle with worsening sleep is linked to reduced sun exposure, says Dr. Gominak.
Given back enough time in deep sleep and the necessary raw materials (D and B vitamins) the brain can make up for the deep sleep that it missed and develop normal social skills even into the teens and early 20’s.
Not a morning person? Dr. Gominak says that’s due to your body not getting the correct sleep at night.

“Self awareness is the key” says Dr. Alibhai, Family Doctor, public speaker and “Community Healer.”
Dr. Alibhai opened our Mental Health Awareness Summit this year with a keynote. Listen here to this episode where we recorded it just for you.
Dr. Alibhai’s parents escaped Uganda as refugees and started their new life in Canada.
She took classes at night at the young age of 16 and became a certified fitness instructor.
She practices as a Family Doctor and is a motivating and inspiring public speaker, famous for her TedX Talk, "Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health." She is known as a "Community Healer."
But, like each of us...she has a story.
After completing her residency in Family Medicine and birthing her first son, the stressors of life caught up with her as much as she knew a lot about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She found herself at rock bottom suffering with postpartum anxiety and feeling alone.
"The first step is to learn to be self-aware." - Dr. Alibhai
Even though Dr. Alibhai studied nutrition, exercise and medicine for ten years, she finally found the missing link - HEALTHY THINKING.
Dr. Alibhai currently works in the largest health youth clinic in British Columbia. She works with young adults ages 12-24. 1 in 5 Canadians suffer from a mental health illness.

According to Gramps Jeffrey, one of the important treasures in life is moral values.
Gramps Jeffrey’s children's book "I Don't Want to Turn 3" serves its purpose of character-building and grooming the personality of your kids by teaching them great moral lessons. It takes readers on a journey into Jordan's world. Jordan's two years old and scared because his parents expect more of him when he turns three tomorrow, and Jordan discovers what happens when you take, when you share, and when you give back.
Gramps Jeffrey wrote this book for grandparents who want to be more involved in influencing how this latest generation grows up.
Gramps Jeffrey has 4 kids and 6 grandchildren and looks at how the kids are growing up as a baby boomer trying to understand how the world has evolved since he was 3 years old.
As the author of the acclaimed business book "The Secrets of Retailing...How to Beat Walmart" and a contributor to The Huffington Post of over 100 articles on how to help the nonprofit world and also help grow small businesses, Gramps' commentary is quite timely in the challenging world we live in.
