With each pregnancy, Shannon experienced different challenges and during her fourth and last one, she had a lot of anxiety. It was unexplained. She had a constant underlying anxiety regardless of the baby doing great and no big life circumstances. She talked with her husband, doctor and God and took medication for a short time for postpartum, which really helped. The day she came home from the hospital with her fourth child, Covid started and we were all in quarantine. Then, her sister unexpectedly passed away right after that and she had a peace that surpassed her understanding. Shannon went from having anxiety for at least 10 months to extreme peace during a time of life, when most of the world didn’t have peace.
In this episode, you will hear:
- Shannon’s story of helping others find peace and purpose among the trials
- All about collagen - that inhibits fat storage, improves muscle tone, restores youthful skin
- A lesson Shannon is learning in motherhood right now
- How to take control of your health and get in your best shape

Kids Need Social Skills - Diana Cortese Makes it Simple to Teach
Monday Jun 20, 2022
Monday Jun 20, 2022
When we equip kids with the tools they need to develop positive peer relationships, we cause a ripple effect of prosocial behaviors resulting in not only more emotionally secure kids but stronger communities as well.
Diana is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and former Special Education teacher dedicated to helping kids develop the 21st century social skills that will lead them to happier, healthier lives.
As both an educator and mom of two boys, she is deeply invested in the type of culture we are creating for our kids. She developed and facilitated social skills groups in public schools at every grade level from preschool to high school. She believes so much in the power of social connection. She even created her own Social Skills Groups at South Bay Kids Connection!
Diane has used this as a model in creating the first of its kind - Social & Play Skills Group course.
Teaching the "soft skills" is more important than ever in today's fast paced, dynamic and nuanced social environments. It's frustrating when our students don't transfer these social skills outside of the classroom. Especially after pouring so much time and energy into teaching them.
Our students all have differing abilities. It can be exhausting and time consuming trying to piecemeal a social learning curriculum together on the fly. How can we make sure that we are teaching the right social skills, in a way that kids will enjoy and retain when there is no one size fits all curriculum?
“All children can and deserve to succeed. But the skills to achieve success today have changed,” says Diana.
In this episode you will learn:
-What are soft skills?
-Why are they so important now more than ever before?
- What our kids need to have to develop these skills?
- Why we explicitly teach social and play skills? (instead of just waiting for them to develop)
-How we can teach social skills to our kids/students in a way that doesn't feel like work (for them)?

There has never been a time in history when educators have felt such overwhelming levels of stress, burnout, and exhaustion. Still, we depend on teachers to be a positive guiding force in our children’s lives – often playing simultaneous roles as educator, parent, mental health counselor, and caring friend. For educators to fulfill these vital roles, it’s abundantly clear that they need to develop resiliency both inside and outside the classroom.
Lisa is a published author of Self-Compassion for Educators as well as, the creator of the AWE Method — Awakening the Wellbeing for Educators — which merges self-care, mindfulness, and self-compassion.
Lisa has a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She has taught internationally and locally. Much of her vast teaching experience was gained in classrooms across British Columbia — from Fort St. John to the Comox Valley. Currently, she is a high school counselor in the Greater Victoria School District.
Trained by mindful self-compassion pioneers Chris Germer and Kristin Neff, Lisa is also a certified Mindful Self-Compassion teacher. You can learn from her by taking an eight-week online MSC course, explore a half-day AWE retreat, or join her Year-Long Mindfulness for Educators program.
No matter the setting — classroom, counseling session, or teacher development — Lisa incorporates concepts of positive psychology, self-compassion, and mindfulness.
Check out her blog for ideas on how to incorporate aspects of mindfulness, and positive education into your classroom and the new curriculum.
Within Self-Compassion for Educators, busy and overwhelmed teachers can learn how to:
- Reduce feelings of shame, criticism, and self-doubt
- Anchor themselves to the present moment
- Develop greater compassion for themselves and others
- Mitigate the effects of chronic stress and develop resilience
- Cultivate a sense of gratitude
- Practice self-care routines that create sustainable well-being
- Avoid exhaustion and burnout
Lisa Baylis has been sharing wellbeing strategies for the last 20 years. A natural born connector with an innate ability to make people feel valued and heard, she is an instructor, a counselor, a facilitator, and a mother.

You’re Not Crazy, Living with Anxiety, | Laurie Singer
Monday May 16, 2022
Monday May 16, 2022
Since losing her two-year-old son to cancer Laurie Singer has devoted her life to the field of mental health. Licensed Psychotherapist, Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and author of “You’re Not Crazy: Living with Anxiety, Obsessions and Fetishes” published in April 2021.
What you will learn in this episode:
- How the pandemic impacted mental health in regards to family, friends and work
- Covid’s impact on children and teens and how can parents help
- Anticipatory anxiety and how it relates to issues out of our control
- When is anxiety “normal” and when does it become problematic
- How to help your child with anxiety
Motivated by her own personal tragedy, Laurie has devoted her life to the field of mental health with a clear vision in mind: to create a team approach for helping individuals resolve behavioral and other mental health issues by applying a unique combination of behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapies.
Her first book, released in April, 2021, is titled "You're Not Crazy: Living with Anxiety, Obsessions and Fetishes.” Using case studies from her successful practice, delivered in a digestible, narrative format and including worksheets designed for the individual to take control of their lives, the book's goal is to help those who suffer deeply from anxiety and mental health concerns. Particularly those which have been exacerbated by the devastating pandemic.
Laurie earned her post-graduate certification in Applied Behavioral Analysis from Kaplan University. She began her college studies at Oxnard College and at UCLA, and completed her undergraduate degree at UCSB. She received her masters from Cal State Northridge in Educational Psychology and proceeded to earn a license in Marriage and Family Therapy. Laurie has been a practicing Behavioral Specialist since 1995 and in private practice since 2004.
Laurie is also an endurance athlete, having made running 100-mile races nearly routine and completing 28 ultra-marathons of 31 miles or longer. She’s a 3-time Ironman competitor and in 2017 was recognized for her accomplishments as an inductee into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame.
Since losing her two-year-old son Jacob Singer to cancer in 1987, she has coordinated an annual fun run and fundraiser (Jacob’s Run) in support of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’s Child Life Program, which provides playrooms and support for patients and their families. To date, more than $350,000 has been raised in support.
She's particularly adept at discussing mental health issues that are deeply-seeded that often take hold in childhood as well as responses to current societal conditions. Case in point, she can take a deep dive in what's known as "anticipatory anxiety" where a person feels great anxiety around things that they can't necessarily control such as wildfires, climate change and even the ongoing process of the pandemic and political unrest.
As an athlete herself, she has also an intimate knowledge of what competitors go through and can share insight into the "athlete in all of us." Laurie is a licensed marriage and family therapist, board-certified in applied behavior analysis, who leads the successful, Camarillo, CA-based Laurie Singer Behavioral Services, Inc.
