“I went to the funeral, mostly to support my sister. I had never even met Emery’s mom, Jenna, at the time. But I went for my sister, Missy, who is Emery’s grandmother,” says Halper.
“Emery’s parents and grandparents were standing in the front, and Emery was in the casket behind them. And something in me snapped that day. I didn’t understand how they were going to do what they were about to do, bury their precious daughter. I wanted to do something about that, or at least be a part of doing something about that, about childhood cancer.”

Between 46 and 60% of all children experience at least one type of trauma by age 18.
26% of children will experience a traumatic event before they turn 4.
In 2018, Governor Carney issued Executive Order #24 prioritizing efforts for Delaware to become a trauma-responsive state.
I recently attended Delaware’s Trauma Awareness Conference, and had the pleasure of sitting down with Delaware’s First Lady, Tracy Carney.

In this podcast episode I sit down with Dr. Lori Desautels and I love what she said, “Behavior management is about adult behavior. It’s not about kids. Our brains and bodies hold the state of our nervous systems, and it takes a steady adult to settle a child or adolescent.”
I was hanging on her every word that she spoke at Delaware’s Trauma Awareness Conference last month. She was the keynote speaker and I attended her breakout session. I’m planning to read her books and have been following her on YouTube and tiktok.
