An Education Kids Want to Show Up For | David Preston, Ph.D.
Saturday Oct 22, 2022
Saturday Oct 22, 2022
Since we have no idea what the economic, political, or environmental landscape will look like when today’s students graduate, we owe it to the next generation to adapt our education practices to meet their needs in facing an increasingly uncertain future.
We need to stop educating children for jobs that we had. We have to do something different, something new, something revolutionary. Open Source Learning is the new wave of education.
Does your child struggle going to school? I bet he wouldn’t if the school was an Open Source Learning Academy.
Open Source Learning engages students in their area of interest - and they learn from those in the field doing what they are interested about, and they connect with them, wherever that individual may be in the world…and yes, they are still able to meet the common core standards.
What students said in Mr. Preston’s class, “I didn’t hate my life for a half hour.”
Many of Dr. Preston’s consulting clients and university students confided that they had to unlearn and recover from what they were taught in school in order to be successful in their careers. In school, we’re told to be quiet and keep our eyes on our own papers. At work, we’re asked why we can’t be better team players.
For a long time in our country, we tolerated education’s shortcomings and the disconnect between school and life after graduation. Generations of parents told their children to suffer because it built character and a diploma was the ticket to the good life. Not anymore.

In a time when teachers and students wonder where education is heading as they grapple with the effects of the pandemic and a deep history of inequalities, David Preston brings us hope with Academy of One. Through students' powerful stories, we learn how Open-Source Learning catalyzes a student-centered pedagogy to create an empowering educational philosophy for the 21st century. Instead of inhibiting students’ curiosity and responsibility, or labeling them with standardized tests and grades, Preston invites us to defy conventional methods, trust students’ capacities, nurture the use of new technology to transform our learning journeys, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and amplify our grasp of effective knowledge.

Adolescents & the Risk of Substance Abuse | Rick Capriola | Mental Health Summit
Wednesday Oct 05, 2022
Wednesday Oct 05, 2022
There are very few things more heart-wrenching for a family than having your child addicted to alcohol or drugs.
The most dangerous attitude a parent can have is thinking, “It could never happen to my child”, says Rick Capriola.
Rick joined me this year at our virtual Mental Health Summit! What he has to share…every parent needs to hear. Share this with someone you know.
In Richard Capriola’s new book, “The Addicted Child” (2020) - he explains substances being used by today's adolescents and the addictions which accompany teen substance abuse, like self-harm and eating disorders. Richard Capriola has been a mental health and addictions counselor for over two decades.
If your child uses alcohol or drugs, you know how it affects your family. These substances enter your child’s brain and change their behavior. You want to help your child, but where do you begin? The Addicted Child is your roadmap. Learn what makes adolescent addiction different. How drugs can change your child’s brain and behaviors. The assessments and tests you should insist upon. And more.
Sadly, your desperate search for help often leaves you feeling alone and without a roadmap to guide you through the process of helping your child. The Addicted Child was written for you.
The percentage of teens using illicit substances dropped significantly in 2021 as the pandemic forced them into isolating from friends, classrooms and extracurricular activities. Alcohol, marijuana and nicotine vaping – the most commonly used substances by teens all showed declines from 2020. These findings were reported by a Monitoring the Future survey conducted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research – http://www.monitoringthefuture.org.
Two issues drive teen substance use: drug availability and perception of risk.

Have More Fun with Your Kids with Michael Rucker, Author of ”The Fun Habit”
Sunday Sep 25, 2022
Sunday Sep 25, 2022
Do you ever find yourself not laughing as much with your kids? Do you miss the fun of your younger years? My guest today is Michael Rucker, author of, “The Fun Habit” - How the Disciplined Pursuit of Joy and Wonder can Change your Life. He is also an organizational psychologist, behavioral scientist and charter member of the International Positive Psychology Association.
Learn more -
After a string of misfortune in 2016, including Mike’s brother’s untimely death, he began to critically evaluate modern approaches to happiness. During this journey, he had an epiphany: his pursuit of happiness was actually making him… unhappy. He realized trying to be “happy” only drew his attention to what was missing. Fixating on his lack of happiness made him label himself as unhappy, and he came to realize that the maladaptive label was bleeding into his identity. This left him with the question: If deliberately chasing happiness leaves me miserable, what’s the alternative? Then, after years of research and trial and error, a second crucial insight clicked into place: We can’t always make ourselves happy, but we all possess the agency to find ways to be more joyful and have more fun.
Unlike happiness, fun isn’t something that may or may not arise under the perfect circumstances or when all of my “if-onlys” are fulfilled. Having fun is an action anyone can take here and now practically anywhere, anytime.
And if you’re a cynic like he was and need to see the proof, science shows us that fun is enormously beneficial to our well-being, both physically and psychologically.
So, let’s have fun together.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month and what would you do if you found out your child searched online, “How to kill myself”. Every parent MUST hear this interview.
According to Baylor college of medicine, an article last November stated, “The pandemic uniquely impacted adolescents. Social isolation, constant uncertainty, stress, and fear have plagued their lives. According to the CDC, teenage emergency room visits for suicide attempts increased significantly during the pandemic, with a 50% rise in cases in females and almost 4% increase in males.”
In this episode you will learn:
- Be attentive to where your child is spending their time.
- Be a good role model. Take care of your own mental health. Your child(ren) is learning from watching how you take care of yourself.
- Questions to ask your child to gauge their mental health state
- Being vulnerable is powerful

Start Your Day with a Guided Meditation | William Meyer
Sunday Sep 11, 2022
Sunday Sep 11, 2022
Mental Health Summit was kicked off this year with a guided meditation led by William Meyer. We brought the recording here for you. It’s a great way to start your day or take a mindful moment in the middle of your day.
William Meyer is the author of “Big Breath” and “Healing Breath” - Calm your worries and build your bravery — or just relax during a busy day or wind down before bed with these two picture books.
All day long, you breathe — in and out, in and out — without even thinking about it. But did you know that you can play with your breath, use it to take you on an adventure? All you have to do is find a comfy spot and close your eyes.
Does your breath sound like ocean waves? Like the wind before a storm or a breeze at the start of spring? Can you feel it all the way down to the tips of your toes? By the time you open your eyes, you might just feel a little lighter, calmer, more relaxed.
Bill Meyer is also the author of two adventure chapter books for kids. He also published a guide for meditation in the classroom called, Three Breaths and Begin. He holds degrees from Dartmouth, Harvard and has a PhD from NYU in Education.

3 weeks prior to giving birth to triplets, Barbara Rubel’s father died by suicide. Her story was featured in an Emmy award winning documentary, “Fatal Mistakes” and she shares her story in her recent book, “But, I Didn’t Get to Say Goodbye”. She is a board certified expert in traumatic stress and she is here today to help you understand the effects of trauma, help build your resilience through laughter, optimism and self-compassion. Barbara Rubel’s specialty is burnout, vicarious trauma, and compassion fatigue.
In this episode you will learn:
- Managing grief after a suicide
- Reactions to a suicide
- What impacts grief after a suicide
- A palette of grief - suggestions to help those left behind
But I Didn’t Say Goodbye: Helping Families After a Suicide tells the story, from the perspective of a family, as they are rocked by suicide and reeling from the aftermath.
The reader will see the transformation of feelings after going through death by suicide. The revised edition is an evidence-informed and contemporary treatment of a devastating form of loss that uses the artful device of a hypothetical case study to render it in human terms.
The reader will understand how to make meaning in the loss, and ways to experience personal growth. This self-help book was revised to provide guidance and education for clinicians and families to help suicide loss survivors.
The chapters in Part 2 build upon one another sequentially, from the day of the suicide to the anniversary of the death. At the end of each chapter, there are follow-up questions to explore in counseling sessions, support groups, or at home.

At our Annual Mental Health Summit, Dr. Gominak shared with us how anxiety, depression, the world epidemic of sleep disorders AND MORE are due to a lack of Vitamins D and B.
Imagine a world filled with people pain-free. Mental illness, anxiety, depression and psychosis is a thing of the past. Medical illness is reduced and medication use is minimized. Dr. Gominak believes this saying is a reality, “See your doctor once a year, heal your body every night.”
Dr. Gominak also says that autism is linked to insufficient deep sleep and that the global struggle with worsening sleep is linked to reduced sun exposure, says Dr. Gominak.
Given back enough time in deep sleep and the necessary raw materials (D and B vitamins) the brain can make up for the deep sleep that it missed and develop normal social skills even into the teens and early 20’s.
Not a morning person? Dr. Gominak says that’s due to your body not getting the correct sleep at night.
